Description
When a few kids at school see their teacher pulling into the school
parking lot and parking without using her hands, it’s confirmed.
She is an evil Witch.
Execution
Casting VW 'The Witch', was a challenge. The quest was to find three 10 year olds with great chemistry, acting prowess, and most importantly, believable English accents, all within the Toronto area - a city not know for this spec...at all. These 3 characters had to be shrewd and observant, have and air of prep school acumen and yet somehow be fooled by their teacher's eery ability to mysteriously back her car into her space perfectly without touching the steering wheel. "She's a witch".
Breakdowns were sent out to 85 agents in the Toronto and Southern Ontario area, as well as a social media blitz including Kijiji, Facebook, Craigslist, and AAction. With over a thousand responses, the choices were culled by vetting the accents. 200 kids were invited to call in and read a small section of the newspaper over the phone with their best English accent. With one casting session to nail this, they curated a group of 60 kids who were invited to audition with director.
In the end, we went with Rafferty Blumberg, a real Brit with no acting experience but real English charm; Daniel Solokhire, a relative newbie to the business who's quirky face and wit won over everyone in the room, and Ellie O'Brien, a bright young actress with a resume longer than most adults.
