Overview

Description

A key objective was to create something so standout, so appealing, that people would want to have it for themselves, to showcase in their home as art.

The key challenge: we needed to find a way to capture and dramatize the power in color in a very simple and memorable way.

Execution

The concept was born from the idea that color can transport you to another time or place. We began exploring paint and its properties and became particularly interested in the negative space left behind in a brush stroke or dripping paint. From the drips came the idea: reveal iconic cityscapes in the negative space, inspired by Valspar color names. Once we had the cities and names, we physically created a cityscape in paint drips and studied it – the slight curves, the drips and nuances that can’t be simulated digitally. Finally, we screen-printed the posters using actual Valspar paint.

Outcome

The poster series generated buzz almost immediately upon release. Customers asked to buy them, print shops and art studios have inquired into the possibility of selling them in their stores, and postings continue to be stolen almost as quickly as they go up.
