Overview

Background

More than 30,000 people sleep on the streets in Spain suffering from the cold every night. People without a home or resources, without a roof to take refuge. And although it seems that nobody pays attention to them, the homeless are the protagonists of thousands of tweets every day.

The medium that every day is flooded with conversations and threads on countless topics, current affairs, information, criticism, politics,... also welcomes the homeless in a space of just a few characters. That observation on the network reflected a worrying situation on the street.

We wanted to transform this existing conversation on social networks into direct and real help.

Idea

We invited people to join the Twitter thread. Making the conversation about the homeless big, we were able to weave blankets for them, with a loom connected in real time to the Twitter thread.

The medium that every day is flooded with conversations and threads about countless topics, current affairs, information, criticism, politics,.... also welcomes the homeless in a space of a few characters. This observation on the network reflected a worrying situation in the street.

We wanted to transform this existing conversation on social networks into a direct and real help. And we did it by transforming a native Twitter tool -threads- into a real action: knitting blankets for the homeless. Connecting digital conversation with social action, by showing the reality of homeless people in Spain.

Strategy

We had clear insights:

- 30,000 people sleeping on the streets.

- A native tool (twitter threads) to turn into real threads in the blankets.

- Reaching men and women from 25 to 35 thanks to whom we managed to knit and deliver to each homeless person on the street their blanket.

The simplest strategy: Ask people to collaborate with a simple tweet.

To turn the conversation into action - and to be able to make blankets that would keep homeless people warm - we linked up with Twitter and the Humana Foundation, which specializes in textile recycling for non-profit social purposes. A tool commonly used by Twitter users -the microblogging threads- served as a platform to develop the idea. Seeking to reach the most active users on the network.

Execution

We created a thread on Twitter_ #HilosQueAbrigan (#WarmingThreads) encouraging users' conversation with the hashtag. For every tweet shared in our thread we added a real thread to weave a blanket. Solidarity unfolded.

Thread after thread generated a stream of words with positive impact. Taking a step forward for a world that knows how to be with people when they need it most.

Outcome

More than 30,000 tweets were written in the thread that became blankets that reached where their coat was most needed: a homeless person.

More than 45 businesses supported this initiative and the initiative crossed borders.

It spread to other countries such as Italy, Germany,... reaching 8,7 million views in one week.

A simple thread managed to create a global aid network achieving the objective: to shelter those who needed it most this cold winter. And showing everyone that well-spun words have the strength to improve the world.
