Description

Drawing inspiration from the new Sonos Playbar's ability to flood a room with massive sound and Sol Lewitt's geometric wall drawings, SONOS PLAYGROUND is a site-specific installation that brings minimalist art to life as an immersive audio-visual world. The installation allows visitors to select any song from an Ipad running spotify and see it visualized across the walls and ceiling of a 250sf shed. In addition they can control the animation through their movement. Everyone at SXSW loved it, even if they were sober. People couldn't believe how big the sound was and how immersive the visuals were.

Execution

The Sonos Studio concept is that it’s a place for creative output and collaboration that celebrates listening and explores the intersection of music and technology– this aligned perfectly with what SXSW is about. Sonos Studio SXSW spanned the interactive, film and music portions on SXSW and curated a programme that featured an interactive projection-mapping installation, a speaker-building workshop, tech talks, live streaming broadcasts, live music performance, films screenings and house parties. We also invited Sonos collaborators like deadmau5, Jason Bentley/KCRW, TuneIn. Hulu Plus, Rudy’s Barbershop and many artists to participate.

Outcome

The installation was a smashing success. Wired, USA today, Creators Project, Billboard and others covered it as one of the coolest experiences at SXSW. Over 700 songs were selected and visualized by visitors. The installation went so well, the Museum of the Moving Image in New York decided to include the piece as part of a major exhibit on the history of music videos. It’s currently on display at the museum through June 16th.
