Description
Our idea was to put together a three-day intensive "on the spot" writing camp with talented songwriters across different genres of music. While writing camps are a popular practice in music and TV/film, this is the first time there has been a “writer’s room” for commercials. Creating the songs with our client would allow us to make any necessary changes in a much shorter time span.
Execution
In January 2018, our songwriters and producers met at our writing camp in Los Angeles to begin working on songs for Zillow. Over the course of three days, musicians worked day and night, interpreting client briefs and reacting in real time to edits of the broadcast pieces. This type of collaboration created songs that were unique for each of the spots. As a result, numerous songs were created including "Better Days" by Lawrence Katz, "Oh Time" and "When I'm With You" by Scarlett Burke, and "Hey Old Friend" by K.S. Rhoads.
Outcome
The campaign started airing in February 2018. As of April 2018, all of the broadcast spots have collectively aired over 8K times on television. The spots have also been viewed over 2MM times online, and maintain an average engagement rating of 8.9/10. The songs were also released worldwide to consumer audiences on all DSP providers, creating a second life for the brand to tell their story. These music back spots became that rare piece of marketing that crossed over into mainstream pop culture. telling the story of Zillow through the power of original music.
