The festive season is the time for celebration, but this can be a tragic time of loss due to road accidents. The main cause of road casualties in the world is careless driving, especially driving under the influence of alcohol. According to WHO statistics, Thailand ranks number 1 in Asia and number 2 worldwide in the number of road traffic deaths. Thailand Ministry of Justice has disclosed the number of drink and drive cases at 4,342 from the previous New Year period (30/12/16 to 5/01/17), a sharp increase of 871 cases (25.9%) from the year before. In 5 years statistics, number of injuries went from 3,329 3,345 3,117 3,505 to 4,128, while number of deaths went from 365 366 341 380 to 478 in 2017. Drink driving remains first cause of road accidents which accounted for 36.59% of all traffic related accidents during the New Year holiday period in 2017.
