Background

LIONS GOOD NEWS is an initiative by Nikkei Inc., the Japanese office of Cannes Lions, that has been ongoing since 2020. Through its content, LIONS GOOD NEWS aims to demonstrate new ways of doing things within and outside the industry and to contribute to making the world a better place. The previous LIONS GOOD NEWS 2020 showcased new approaches during the pandemic through content exceeding 100,000 words, utilizing past works from Nikkei NEWS and Cannes Lions. However, three years have passed since then, and while the pandemic has subsided, the world has drastically changed. As a result, Nikkei Inc. was tasked with developing new content.

Describe the creative idea

First, we conducted a survey of NPOs in Japan. Over 80% of the NPOs reported that their communication efforts were not penetrating and that they had no new connections. In response, we created a website and experience that redefine the concept of "meeting" for the future. The idea is based on flowers with the meanings of meeting or connection in the universally recognized language of flowers. We created a guide to new meetings in the form of seven articles totaling in excess of 200,000 words and based on past works from Nikkei News and Cannes Lions compiled together under the theme of each of the seven flowers. Additionally, we introduced a new content featuring ChatGPT, which was implemented for the first time in Japan, to provide a platform for discussion and new connections for users and NPOs who cooperated with us.

Describe the execution

The concept of the content is "Meet the World." The goal is to provide new ways of meeting for the users who visit the site and over a hundred organizations working to make the world a better place. The site features seven flowers and petals with meanings related to meeting, expressed with shading using WebGL. The articles, which total over 200,000 words, ensure readability while minimizing load times for a seamless user experience. The site also features a search system integrated with ChatGPT and Google Search API to help users create meaningful connections. ChatGPT is characterized as an expert in creating connections that make the world a better place. By discussing social issues such as animal welfare and aging, the system recommends NPOs that entered past Cannes Lions events or cooperated with the current survey.

List the results

LIONS GOOD NEWS 2023, a campaign that introduced ChatGPT, has gained significant attention. Top-tier media outlets such as WIRED and FORBES have commented on it. The website itself has recorded exceptional numbers, with an average of three visits and an engagement time of more than two hours per user. The initiative’s use of ChatGPT has been highly regarded by major organizations such as WWF for "breaking the filter bubble and providing new meetings for NPOs”. As a result, many NPOs have expressed gratitude, and the initiative has achieved great success.
