Why is this work relevant for Brand Experience & Activation?

Unfear is the first AI app developed to help the autistic collective and people with hearing disorders.

It offers the possibility to experience a whole journey of freedom to face the world without fear or panic attacks due to noises. It’s a game changer where algorithms scan and suppress specific sounds (Outside & inside mobile) creating a sound airbag for all users. Thus, the sufferer can go outside, play videogames or watch movies with the reassurance that AI is protecting them automatically and in real time. Unfear has been tested by ASD people for a 100% real and useful experience.

Background

Situation: Globally, 70M people are on the autism spectrum. They suffer panic attacks and anxiety crises due to hyperacusis (sensitivity to specific noises, such as barks, sirens or construction works, etc).

Brief: Actual Noise cancellation technology blocks all noises for people with autism. But this also isolates them. Samsung needed a smart and universal solution to suppress the noises without limiting the lives of over 450K ASD Spaniards.

Objective: Use an existing Samsung technology: Buds2 Pro earphones. Through this wearable device we create an A.I App that suppresses certain noises and improves the quality of life of people with ASD. With Unfear we transform actual Samsung devices into an effective and free tool that gives a new audio experience and interaction with the world to the ASD collective.

Describe the creative idea

The first smart noise canceling app that protects ASD people and those with hearing disorders from stressful noises. Unfear works thanks to advanced AI that continuously listens, pinpointing every sound before cross-referencing in real-time with thousands of audio libraries to suppress only the noises that affect each user.

Unfear is a 5-function multi tool. Its 2 main filter modes are the smart cancellation of external sounds and the sound wave modification of mobile content (games, video, social networks and music). But it also has a focus mode, a SOS button and a calm mode that plays binaural sounds through a keyword voice recognition to help the affected return to a normal state.

Describe the strategy

Our strategy is focused on helping the ASD Collective, usually a forgotten audience.

Phase 1: Test mode: After 9 months, 10 ASD associations and over 100 ASD people with their families, doctors, and engineers helped us on the testing phase to create Unfear.

Phase 2: Organic spread: During International Autism Awareness Day, we launched our free app generating not only downloads, but starting the conversation on the news. More than 200 local and international media covered it and the main Spanish ASD associations spread the news among the collective. It was also supported by doctors and ASD influencers.

Phase 3: We launched an experience video testing Unfear during the noisiest Holiday in Spain where an ASD kid enjoyed this fireworks street festival proving how powerful the tool is.

Phase 4: We are creating new experiences during 2023/24 in Spanish popular events to generate awareness between ASD & hyperacusis people.

Describe the execution

Unfear has been created by a team of developers, engineers, doctors, therapists and the 10 most important ASD associations in Spain. During the 9 months of research, production and testing, they all provided feedback to improve the tool. We also got the scientific endorsement of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health.

Through a mini-tutorial on the Google Store we explain how easy, intuitive and functional the app is. Unfear was designed hand to hand with ASD people to make it accessible through pictograms and help all users to understand its functions.

Unfear was launched to the media and the Google Play Store at the end of March 2023, ready for International Autism Awareness Day. It’s currently available for free in Spain and it’ll be soon available worldwide.

List the results

To date the results are promising. Unfear had a 4.9/5 rating in the testing phase and has been scientifically endorsed by the Spanish Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health. The reviews from specialized ASD doctors, otorhinolaryngologists

and ASD associations have been great.

Since its launch, the promotional videos gained 1M of earned media around the globe. During the first months of the app in the market Samsung has donated over 100 Galaxy Buds2 Pro to the main ASD associations in Spain to increase the use of the app, give visibility to the collective and reaffirm with facts the brand's commitment to help through the use of technology.

Unfear continues the work done by Samsung in its Technology with Purpose campaign. For over a decade, the brand has worked on more than 30 projects with an investment of +€25M to help and improve people's lives through technology and innovation.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

Unfear was launched in late March 2023, in order to get some traction during World Autism Awareness day on April 2nd.

Presenting it on this date helped us to highlight the need that the ASD community has to access greater emotional well-being and a better quality of life. Spain is one the most sociable countries in the world and one of the loudest too, so it’s natural that a tool that allows sufferers to interact with the environment and the people was very well received. Unfear goes beyond noise cancellation, creating a great solution for the ASD collective with this new customizable app on the way they can interact with sounds in their everyday lives.
