BriefExplanation

When Norway, in 2017, was the first country in the world to shut off their FM-radio-network, Amnesty International turned it back on, to broadcast its first distress signal since second world war.

The distress signal was a looped recording from the sister of Teodora Vasquez - a Salvadoran woman sentenced to 30 years in jail after suffering a stillbirth.

With the help of our own FM-receiver we managed to hijack the FM-radio-network. And the national media caught on at once.

But since our FM-receiver only had a radius of 8 km(5 miles), we decided to make it possible for people to help boost Tedora's distress signal.

With the help of two 24/7 LIVE streams of the same distress signal - one for Facebook and one for twitter - we made it possible for anyone to spread the signal by turning their Facebook or twitter into a radio antenna.

EntrySummary

Injustice happens when nobody is paying attention.

In El Salvador any form of abortion is prohibited and women are being sentenced as murders.

Teodora Vasquez had already been in prison for 10 years, serving a 30 year conviction after suffering a still birth.

Amnesty International are known for putting pressure on governments using petitions or pressure from the media, but had already tried several petition campaigns towards El Salvador. And medias attention were every where else than a 10 year old human rights case.

In 2017 Norway was the first country in the world to shut down its FM-radio-network.

Every national news station was talking about it.

But no one was talking about Teodora Vasquez. And no one was listening to her sister.

Before Amnesty International hijacked the Norwegian FM-network, and gave this silenced media to someone no one was listening to.

Implementation

This has never happened before, and will never happen again;

In 2017 Norway was the first country in the world to shut down its FM-radio-network, to go fully digital. It was a daily topic in media through 2017.

As the government finally turned it off, Amnesty International used their own radio receiver to start a broadcasting on the silenced media: The first distress signal on the Norwegian FM-network since the second world war.

The national attention happened within minutes.

And the campaign could have stopped here.

Instead we picked up the signal from a local FM-transmitting radio, and started a 24/7 LIVE STREAM in social media, making it possible for anyone to boost our signal using twitter or Facebook. And soon our local distress signal was being broadcasted all over the world.

"Please help, please listen, my sisters name is Teodora Vasquez, I dont know what to do. They have sentenced her to jail for having a miscarriage- we really need your help. The government of El Salvador has sentenced her to 30 years for loosing her baby. We really need your help, the help of each and everyone, so that my sister can be free this 8th of December. Please if you can, tell everyone to help us. She has already spent 10 years in prison.
