BriefExplanation

The film, distributed on YouTube and in a mobile game, is set in a dystopian world where all food production is controlled by fictional industrial giant Crow Foods. The Crow Foods factory is staffed by scarecrows who have been displaced from their traditional jobs on the farm and are now relegated to working for the crows by helping them maintain their unsustainable processed food system.

To enhance the message of the film, it is set to a remake of the song "Pure Imagination" from the 1971 film classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," in a cover performed by the artist.

Execution

“The Scarecrow” animated short film was created by utilizing a number of animated film techniques including CG animation, 2D backgrounds and hand-crafted miniatures, which allowed the team to draw a stark contrast between the industrial world of Crow Foods and the organic world of the Scarecrow.

A specific example of this combination of techniques occurs at 2:25 when the Scarecrow picks ingredients. In the background is a miniature barn and corn stalks (made from materials such as wood and silk), while in the foreground, the Scarecrow is a CG-animated, 3D model. In the next shot, the truck and its contents are CG and the city background is a 2D matte painting created in Photoshop. When the scene cuts to the kitchen, the environment is a miniature, including the boxes, stove and vegetables. These miniatures were shot with a Nikon D7000 on a desktop dolly. The team then animated the Scarecrow, which was then composited with the miniature footage.

Utilizing all of these techniques and processes allowed the team to achieve a natural and organic appearance that contrasted the cold and mechanical qualities of Crow Foods. It also allowed the team to quickly create environments without having to create models for every object in the scene. The use of these combined animations techniques where all motivated by a need to create a story, world and characters that could deliver a complex message of change in a simple manner.
