BriefExplanation
We went to public schools at 4 different locations where kids under 6 years old are in high risk of malnutrition to provide them with uniforms capable of displaying alerts in real-time.
Knowing we can find out how malnourished a child is depending on its arm diameter, we integrated a special meter on the sleeves of the clothes they wear daily to go to school.
By simply adjusting it to the kid's arms, teachers and parents could track all the time their nutritional status, with kids making no extra effort at all. Depending on the arm's diameter, a simple arrow on the side of the sleeve pointed the colour green, yellow or red. Each color was related to a nutrition state, meaning yellow and red moderate or severe malnutrition situation. In this case, a nutritional experts’ number was located on the shirt's label for immediate help and treatment.
EntrySummary
The early years of a child's life mark its physical and emotional development for the rest of its life. In Mexico, 1 out of every 8 children under the age of five suffers from malnutrition. Battling this problem is difficult because it often remains invisible. Malnourished children may look healthy; if so, how could parents address the illness with proper treatment or better nutrition?
Another thing that complicates identifying malnutrition cases is that in this country not all the kids have a good access to medical services. On average, social health professionals just arrive once or twice per year to schools in remoted areas.
As children nutrition experts, Kellogg’s knew it was necessary to make the problem visible to develop a social campaign to expose malnutrition cases in order to make the brand’s food programs more effective and relevant for kids in high risk.
