Description
Given that 30% of Chrome downloads are based on recommendation, we wanted to create an experience so compelling that people would want to download Chrome and share the experience with friends. We also wanted to showcase the power of HTML5 technologies.
JAM with Chrome is an interactive website that enables people in different locations to play music together in the Chrome browser on their computers. No matter what level, you can JAM together in real-time over the web with up to three other people.
Choose from a selection of 19 different instruments, from acoustic and bass guitars to drum kits and keyboards. In the default ‘easy mode’ you can become an instant rockstar using the pre-recorded arrangements or switch to ‘pro mode’ to manually play any instrument using your keyboard. Invite friends to join you and create a real-time virtual band.
Execution
In July 2012, we launched Web Lab in beta, a world first for a physical exhibition with a teaser film. After the 3 month testing phase we simultaneously launched the improved physical exhibition and website, supported with a launch film, on-line banners, and PR.
Outcome
In July 2012 we launched Web Lab in beta, and since then it has been experienced by over 5.5 million online visitors from 196 countries and 300,000 museum visitors, resulting in 4.5 million user generated creations. Its overwhelming success reinforces the power of computer science and technology as a means to inspire, educate and communicate.
Web Lab pushes the boundaries of a conventional exhibition and truly demonstrates the possibilities of the modern web. Long term, we hope that Web Lab sets a new precedent for education in public spaces and how they made become more accessible to people from all over the world.
