Nando’s introduced its own ‘Flame of Glory’ torch and announced the ‘arrival’ of the flame prior to the actual day. It’s mascot, Barcy, a cockerel, ran with the Flame on the day the Olympic Torch Relay took place, supported by placard-bearing ‘supporters’ as he ran, not the official relay route, but the route of youth hangouts and popular venues.
The Nando’s restaurant itself was done up with posters proclaiming itself as the ‘Home of the Flame’ and even had a Wall of Flame for photos of Barcy and customers.
Outcome
Nando’s received tremendous coverage in the local press, with one newspaper even mistakenly stating that the ‘Olympic Torch’ arrived at Nando’s! The run of the cockerel was the talk of the town on the day of the Olympic Torch Relay and photographs clicked on mobiles were shared across the city. Customers walking in days after the event (the restaurant was packed to capacity on the day of the run) also mentioned the event.
