Description

This four-part scripted series, directed by Gia Coppola and styled by Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips, is a modern retelling of the Orpheus myth (a rich source of cinematic inspiration from Cocteau’s Orphee to Camus’ Black Orpheus). Orpheus, son of Apollo, marries Eurydice, who is later pursued by Aristaeus. While running from Aristaeus, a snake fatally bites her, and she’s taken to the underworld. Heartbroken, Orpheus journeys there (an underground East Village nightclub) to play guitar for Hades so he might impress him enough to free Eurydice. Hades, moved by Orpheus’ guitar playing, allows him to reclaim Eurydice on one condition: if Orpheus looks back as he leads her from darkness to light, she will be lost to him forever. The ending is tragic, but the cast, representative of New York’s downtown scene (Lou Doillon, Waris Ahluwalia, Laura Love), is haute as hell—and dreamily decked out in Gucci.
