Overview

Background

Our goal was to find a solution to the noise pollution in the city and create a highly effective project with a low-budget and technological software. Instead of reaching users through a social media platform membership, we wanted to reach a wider audience through display areas. Users were directed to playlists according to the ambient noise level, which also increased the time spent on our music platform.

Idea

We developed a project with our online music listening platform/app, fizy, where users can listen to the sound of the city. Through our sound detection technology, users were able to listen to the sound of the city by allowing access to their microphone through the mobile masthead area. We directed users to different playlists based on the wavelength and intensity of the sound we detected. We aimed to capture users at any time of the day, in every city they are in, while consuming content on the websites they frequently visit, and direct them to specially designed playlists on our music platform.

Strategy

When we look at music listening habits in Turkey, we see that people listen to music the most during their morning commute to work/school and during their return hours. Therefore, we increased our bid costs for advertising during these hours.

Execution

We positioned ourselves in the mobile masthead areas of more than 50 premium websites. By obtaining consent from users, we allowed users who gave permission to the microphone to open their soundbar equalizer. Based on the sound level detected by the equalizer bar software, we created music playlists that differ according to four different BPMs: plain, low sugar, medium sugar, and high sugar. Users who allowed microphone permission on a noisy location in the city were directed to the "high-sugar" playlist that could suppress the high BPM noise of the city. Users who started working in a quiet place were directed to the "simple" playlist, consisting of low BPM, calm songs.

Outcome

Visitors were able to listen to the sound of the city through their microphones a total of 720,000 times, allowing us to calculate the Beats Per Minute (BPM) value of the city. With our usage extending beyond Istanbul, during the campaign, we were able to calculate the BPI value for 81 different cities, with Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir being the top three cities with the most calculations performed. Throughout the campaign, a total of 3,456,000 seconds of audio recordings were calculated for the 81 cities, averaging 4.8 seconds per city. We then created relevant playlists for users based on their location and the calculated BPI value. Most importantly, our users were able to experience a little bit of peace and quiet away from the noise of the city.
