In a 2021 Super Bowl spot that created some serious buzz, Will Ferrell and General Motors had a threatening message for Norway. Not only were they planning to dethrone the country as the world´s electric vehicle leader, the “Stepbrothers” actor also wanted to “crush those losers”. The spot led to a swarm of response videos from Norwegian brands.

Exactly one year later Eldorado, a Norwegian cheese brand, has a direct response for Ferrell: They aren´t angry anymore.

In the soothing video, Eldorado put the drama to rest, armed with a cheese that has been matured for 12 moths.

“Hello, Will Ferrell!” says the spokesman jovially. “Some of us were very offended by what you said... A few Norwegian companies were quick to tell you, remember?”

“Like a good cheese, feelings mature,” The man says, patting a large piece of Eldorado´s 12 moth aged Grana Padano. “They get better with time.”

Cultural / Context information for the jury

The threatening Super Bowl spot created a ton of attention in Norway. The spot was all over the news and social media. Naturally a landslide of response videos was created by Norwegian brands! From small electric companies to the biggest advertisers in the country. Everyone wanted a piece of the action.

One respondent came from Audi Norway, featuring “Game of Thrones” actor Kristoffer Hivju

The response from Eldorado came a little bit later. 12 months to be exact. This matches the period the cheese has been stored to reach its level of maturity. And speaking of mature: The Eldorado spot stars Harju’s father, actor Erik Hivju

The early bird might catch the worm. But being last of the Norwegian brands reacting to the 2021 Ferrell spot gave us more attention from Norway than most of the brands that made videos at the same time as everyone else.

Tell the jury about the casting process.

Most response videos from other Norwegian brands were angry. Some even challenged Will Ferrell to a fight. Eldorado’s video took a more mature response. And here the casting was key. Casting a talented and elderly actor was essential. We needed someone who could act out our message of “not being angry anymore” in a graceful way. The actor himself became an important part of the idea. Because when we made a mature response video from a mature product: Having an actor that had reached a mature age added to the message.

Perhaps the most famous and most angry response video from another brand was made by Audi in Norway, featuring Norwegian “Game of Thrones” actor Kristoffer Hivju. In our video we casted Erik Hivju. The father of Kristoffer Hivju. This underlined the idea and even became an important part of the local PR-potential of the campaign.
