A group of four friends get out of a car, put their jackets on and start to walk through grass fields. They stop, they just heard something.

From the back of the field a gust of wind comes and when it’s about to reach them, one of them begins to run and is swept up.

They glide over the grass until we see them land. The take-off where they are joined by the rest of the protagonists.

Now they are in a forest. They’re flying over the ground using the trunks to push themselves forward, with their hands, their feet, in a beautifully choreographed journey.

They come out of the trees and fly over a lake, touching the water and moving to the finale where they skirt through long grass to then draw themselves together into a ball which we see move over a cliff face.

The location of wheat fields and forest is not entirely locked to the British countryside alone; we wanted to the context of the film to have a subliminal feel throughout to be bookended at the final with the white cliffs of Dover so there was no doubt we were in Britain.

The script was written by the directors based on three words: Freedom, Outdoors, British.

After coming up with the idea, the main question was how you direct people that fly in a new way. The parameters first were to find cast that fitted the client brief (models who had wire experience) and then rehearse and find out how we could choreograph four people in the air. Storyboards don’t help much but five days of rehearsal do. The direction to keep this as much in camera as possible landed on the idea of hanging the DOP/Camera in a wire with the actors to get the longest takes without cuts all in camera, with as little “post” as possible.
