Why is this work relevant for Innovation?
Cap the Tap is an upcycling idea where the cap of the Finish Rinse Aid bottle is redesigned to serve as a perlator - a water saving valve that can be screwed to onto water taps. So once the bottle is finished, the cap continues its journey as an apparatus that can save up to 9 litres of water per minute by regulating its flow. Perlators have been around for a while, but not many people are aware of their existence, or concsious enough to seek and purchase one. Repurposing the cap as one however is a world first innovation.
Background
UN estimates Turkey to be a water poor country in less than a decade. Yet research shows we keep wasting our water on needless chores. Rinsing dishes before putting them in the dishwashers is one them, causing 57 litres in every cycle, amounting up to millions of tons every year. 4 years ago, Finish took on the role to increase awareness on the issue amongst a public then-not-so-interested... there is huge progress after several campaigns to inform, inspire and activate: 6 million houses have stopped pre-rinsing. However 46% of the people around the globe say they will not change their daily habits to save the environment. Alongside communication that aims to convert opinions, ideas that enable saving water effortlessly are equally needed.
Describe the idea
We redesigned the cap of the Finish Rinse Aid bottle. Once the bottle is finished the cap can be upcycled by screwing to the tip of the water tap. Then, it serves as a perlator, an apparatus that regulates the flow of the water, and saves up to 60 to 70% of water. In other words, up to 9 liters of water every minute. It is designed in accordance to the most common tap standard, called M22, estimated to be used in 90% of the Turkish homes.

Describe the innovation / technology
Finish Rinse Aid is a constantly used product for dishes. However, when this product is finished, the package is thrown directly into the trash.
At the same time, although the perlator is sold in places but no one goes and buys it. So we decided to combine these two. The liquid had to flow both ways but perlator and cap have entirely different dynamics. We knew we had to comply both and it should be fit every tap…
Then we have reduced the amount of water while increasing the water flow rate with the filter system we have integrated into the inside of the Finish Rinse aid cover. We achieved this with an m22 head design that does not affect the liquid flow of our product and fits 90% of the taps. Thanks to Finish, our users have saved water in the faucet they use by replacing the tap heads that can be simply removed with the cover of our product.
By reinforcing our two detailed product covers, such as the transducer interface for concave and convex faucets, and the pressure increasing filter, 9 liters of water per minute was saved from one faucet.
Describe the expectations / outcome
Cap the Tap can save an average of 35 tons in a single home in one year. The mass production begins in January 2023 and the first year penetration target is 1 million homes. The amount of water this simple device is expected to help save is between 20 to 35 million tons every year. Which in more practical terms, is equal to a medium sized lake.
