Imagine a place where creators, curators and YOU converge to celebrate and shape our culture.

ComplexCon is our generation’s World Fair - a 2 day exhibit and festival focused on pop culture, music, fashion, entertainment, sports and art, giving brands and marketers alike a unique playground to experiment with a diverse core group of trend-conscious consumers. This isn’t just a brand slapping a logo, but developing a custom activation around each brand partner in a multi-sensory approach. Part commerce, conference and concert - ComplexCon was grounds for consumers to congregate.

ComplexCon brings the world of Complex to life. The minds behind Complex came together with Cultural Director/Executive Chair Pharrell Williams, legendary artist Takashi Murakami, Off-White designer and founder Virgil Abloh alongside Host Committee members Colette co-founder Sarah Andelman, reggaeton superstar J. Balvin, actor/activist Jaden Smith, DJ/producer Skrillex, and actor/tech entrepreneur Jesse Williams, creating a cultural zeitgeist for today's youth.

Execution

ComplexCon takes a year to create, bringing together the leaders from verticals across fashion, music, sports, food and more to lead implementation on the most forward-thinking activations for today’s generation in one place.

ComplexCon is held over the course of 2 days at the Long Beach Convention Center in southern California, catering to over 50,000.

Divided into four main sections. Panels and conversations - with topics ranging from opinions on the best sneaker of 2017 to creating a successful collaboration and building an influential brand.

Musical performances from NERD to Gucci Mane. A food zone. And the marketplace: a massive expo of booths and installations. Major brands like Nike and adidas have a place, but also emerging marques like Billionaire Boys Club and The Hundreds are welcome and celebrated alike. Other brands such as McDonald’s, Intel, and eBay powered experiences more than products.

Outcome

ComplexCon is the chance for brands to be face to face with their consumer base and engage with them on a deeper, more meaningful level. The one thing you can’t copy and paste is brand energy. Complex brings together all the passion points that speak to the interests of Complex’s readers.

Complex created a marketplace for cultural in-real-life moments that translated into massive broadcast platforms and engagement opportunities for consumers. ComplexCon brought the internet in real life in an unprecedented convergence festival of pop culture, art, food, style, sports, music, and more.

ComplexCon is the intersection of thoughts, ideas, fashion, music, youth culture, art. It is an innovation in commerce because it’s sort of like the coolest mall you’ve never been to, and you can’t go to because it only happens once a year. It’s about collaboration, creative energy and a showcase. Allowing genres to mash up in ways that you haven’t experienced before.

It’s the audience that brings this event together, and this audience is important, influential, like-minded, and they’re not easily put in a box. You could say that ComplexCon caters to a 35 and younger street culture youth, yet still broadly appeals. You can start the day seeing a venture capitalist talk about some bitcoin blockchain he started, and end the day seeing N.E.R.D. perform. ComplexCon empowers the next generation of young hustlers and go-getters.

Synopsis

Situation: Pop culture waits for no one. Instead, it marches boldly ahead, forging paths where no media has gone before it. How do you keep up with it ever-changing? You could stay plugged in 24/7, browsing the internet on all social media, giving up any chance of getting any sleep. Or, you could bring together the top influencers in culture and brands of all kinds under one roof.

Challenge: Naturally, a pecking order forms among brands at these types of shows. Big brands with big budgets win, while smaller brands with shallower pockets get shitted on. Seeing a flaw in the system, we saw an opportunity to disrupt and turn trade-shows upside-down.

Objectives: Bring together renowned thought leaders to create an experience that deepens our understanding of one another, our culture and the passions that inspire us to create a place for today’s generation of consumers rather than industry executives.
