Why is this work relevant for Brand Experience & Activation?

As Japan’s leading beverage manufacturer, Suntory has been working to promote health and wellness. They have been also looking for the possibility of reduce/reuse/recycle of plastic bottles. CPR TRAINING BOTTLE is the experience design that enables people to reuse the bottle of Japan’s highest-selling water, Suntory Natural Mineral Water, to learn correct CPR at a super low cost and scientifically proven way. This is the brand activation that highlights Suntory’s action towards health and wellness.

Background

CPR hasn't been performed in about 50% of cases in Japan where around 200 people/day die suddenly from heart failure. This is due to the high price of training kits, ranging from several thousand to several tens of thousands of yen. The challenge is to break the price barrier of learning correct CPR. FastAid, an NPO working to spread CPR skills has teamed up with Suntory, which has been looking for the possibility of reduce/reuse/recycle of plastic bottles.

Describe the creative idea

What if we could do CPR training with something accessible to all? We wanted to break the price barrier of CPR training by enabling people to practice CPR using something that is already around us; plastic bottles. In contrast to the ordinary CPR training that has limited access and opportunity, CPR TRAINING BOTTLE is an engaging experience that lets people practice CPR repeatedly and continuously whenever they want.

Describe the strategy

Our target audience was the people and organizations that have limited access to CPR training because of the high price of the training kits. By enabling CPR training using a bottle of Japan’s highest-selling water, we broke the price barrier to CPR training. We created a new scientifically proven training methodology using an empty bottle and our training mat made of paper along with our online training video. In addition, we have been continually holding training events with companies and local authorities across Japan to spread this methodology.

Describe the execution

We made it possible to practice CPR with just an empty plastic bottle and our training mat made of paper. It costs only 1/18 of the standard training kit, and this scientifically proven methodology broke the price barrier of CPR training. We focused on the bottles’ give and proved scientifically that Suntory Natural Mineral Water bottles have nearly the same give as the human body, and would be effective in CPR training. Based on this, we developed an original training method. “Heartbeat design” indicates where to place the bottle and push to ensure learning correct CPR by simply watching the dedicated training video available online. It is an experience designed to let people practice CPR repeatedly regardless of time and place. In addition, we have been continuously holding training events with over 30 of Japan’s leading companies and local authorities to spread CPR skills using our training kit.

List the results

CPR TRAINING BOTTLE is loved by people for its fun and engaging experience design of learning correct CPR. Over 27,000 training kits have been delivered online. Almost 2,000 people have taken part so far in our training events. After being shown on popular TV programs, CPR TRAINING BOTTLE has become a matter of interest across the country. Japan’s largest security company started to bundle the training kit with their AED. Also, companies and local authorities support this idea, resulting in getting subsidies to distribute the kit to fire stations and schools at a scale of 60,000 of them. Above all, there are even cases of our training participants saving the lives of people who suffered cardiopulmonary arrest.
