Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The film follows a woman caring for her husband with dementia. We watch as she battles with everyday challenges around their home, creating a sense of claustrophobia and isolation.

This visual struggle plays out against a sound bed of phone calls, made by the wife as she tries in vain and with increasing desperation, to get the help she needs from the failing government care system.

The film concludes with a crescendo of desperate phone calls and the news that her request for care funding has been unsuccessful.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

In the UK, most medical care is free trough the National Health Service (NHS). This is not the case for those living with dementia and Alzheimer's. Instead their love ones are left to care for them, without assistance. This campaign drew attention to their struggle and put pressure on the government to review the care system.

Tell the jury about the casting process.

Kate Dickie (our protagonist), was a dementia carer herself. She looked after her mother, who had suffered from early onset dementia for many years. It made her the perfect casting for the role. Her experience with the disease also meant she had previous interactions with The Alzheimer’s Society, and this was how we approached her.

Although the original script wasn’t written with Kate in mind, her genuine experience of dementia care meant she brought her unique perspective to the claustrophobic world of the couple in our film. She workshopped many of the scenes from real life experiences she had with her mother.
