Write a short summary of what happens in the film

Expensify is a game-changing app that lets you do your expenses by snapping a photo of a receipt. To demonstrate that, we created an original track and the world’s first music video you can expense staring rap mogul and big spender 2 Chainz, who was shown living the life of a baller. Viewers could snap a photo of receipts in the music video to get reimbursed actual cash—just like in real life.

Our 60-second Super Bowl film was the world’s first commercial you can expense. In

it, 2 Chainz gets interrupted by an old-school finance guy who wants paper receipts for everything in the video. 2 Chainz schools him on how there’s no need to save receipts with Expensify. The spot featured a receipt for 2 Chainz’s ice-sculpted Lamborghini. By snapping a photo of the receipt using Expensify, viewers could get reimbursed the cash value of the car ($200,000).

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Grammy-winning rap mogul 2 Chainz is a cultural icon who’s also widely known as a big spender, thanks to his Vice TV show Most Expensivest. His rap songs are full of extravagant references to his lifestyle. He’s an Atlanta-based music artist, and Atlanta hosted the 2019 Super Bowl, which made him extremely relevant. Culturally, there was a negative reaction to Maroon 5 (a non-Atlanta-based group) being selected to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show. But Expensify earned lots of respect and positive press for choosing an authentic Atlanta hip-hop artist to lead the campaign. We timed our campaign to coincide with the launch of 2 Chainz’s new, much-anticipated album, and leverage that surrounding hype. Choosing actor Adam Scott to play the old-school finance guy was a wink to his beloved TV character Ben Wyatt, an accountant on Parks and Recreation.

Please tell us about the challenger brand and how your campaign challenged/was different from your competitors

Most people don’t associate badass rap videos with financial technology companies. But Expensify isn’t like any other financial technology company. They let people focus on what they were born to do. Our campaign, “You Weren’t Born to Do Expenses,” featured 2 Chainz, who was born to be a superstar rapper. So rather than make a traditional advertising campaign, Expensify broke new ground with the world’s first music video you can expense, which was also a product demo. Viewers were able to experience technology in the game-changing app in a fun and entertaining way. No one had done that before—let alone in the stuffy world of corporate expense management. On top of that, Expensify had never made an ad before. Their first to-consumer campaign included two world firsts.
