BriefExplanation

In this film, we meet Mick and Kate, a real couple on the last day of their mortgage. As they come to the end of this 20-year journey, they find themselves reminiscing about their lives together and what this home has come to represent. As their memories unfold, we see their story come to life with old photos, prized processions and old camcorder footage of them and their three children.

As they ponder the significance of the achievement of paying off their home, they can’t help but reflect on what has been their unshakeable belief that this would be the home they dreamed of, and that whatever happened they’d see it through. They always believed they’d do it.

EntrySummary

In 2008, Ireland found itself at the centre of the global recession, when this tiny country looked like it might single-handedly take down the Euro. With all the major banks failing, the government and the taxpayer had no choice but to step in and guarantee the major financial institutions. Against this backdrop people found themselves in negative equity, struggling to continue to pay huge, Celtic Tiger mortgages. As a result of all of this, now in post recession Ireland, the average Irish consumer is nervous, cynical and anxious about taking on a mortgage, but at the same time, it is probably the only way they’ll ever own their own home.

Implementation

The cast of mortgage campaigns the world over look the same; a young, attractive, unbearably happy couple starting out life together.

This campaign required a different approach. Our idea was to cast people who were at the end of their mortgages. To inspire our audience by casting real customers who’d been through it all, and for whom the mortgage was worth it.

Our cast needed to be real customers of the bank. We started with a list of 682 customers and 4 amazing researchers. And so started the cold calling. Some hung up. Some we’re just not right. And then we were left with 101 potential couples.

We then took to the road to meet them all in person, and met Kate and Mick, a charismatic couple from the southern point of Ireland. We instantly fell love with them and built our film around their unique story. Using their beautiful home, family photos
