Background:
Jamais Sans Elles is a French NGO that promotes gender diversity and inclusion in various sectors, particularly in the technology industry. It campaigns for a more inclusive and equitable society by ensuring that women's voices are heard, and their talents recognized. Because AI systems are trained on historical data, they tend to produce results that are discriminatory towards individuals based on their gender. With the democratization of AI with Chat GPT or Midjourney, we wanted to denounce these biases. Can we really talk about progress when AI makes us take such a big step backwards?
Describe the Impact:
The NGO benefitted from unprecedented exposure. The campaign achieved reach of 32.6 million and continues to be shared today, including in some unexpected spheres. Everywhere, the creative idea is being leveraged to educate people: by conference speakers, academics and even the French Ambassador to NATO, Muriel Domenach, during a NATO-organized event. Even more significantly, in Denmark the “Where is gender equality” campaign is to be integrated into a program funded by the Education Ministry. Every year, more than 5,000 school students and 500 teachers in Denmark will use the campaign as material for tackling gender equality.
Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?
Like in all Western countries, the French don’t have a clear understanding of AI, which they tend to see as both progress and a threat. This technology is still relatively new to the general public, so it’s crucial to provide guidance so that everyone can understand and use it knowingly.
