2002 the first detainee arrived at the American prison camp at Guantánamo Bay. President Obama promised more than three years ago to close the camp, and that those incarcerated there should be brought to justice. But Guantánamo still holds more than 80 prisoners captive with neither convictions nor pending trials. For the 10th anniversary of the prison camp in Guantánamo the campaign brief was to collect protest signatures.
To bring attention to the anniversary we combined the ”slide to unlock”-function with the American flag. In wallpapers for iPhones, iPads and other smartphones and tablets a prisoner was locked behind the stars and stripes.
The campaign also included a cage made in the same manner in which a silent protest was held, and a big outdoor projection in central Stockholm. We created an interactive way of showing protesters the power of a signature. When you signed and unlocked the iPad, the billboard reacted simultaneously, ”releasing” the prisoner and showing your signature on the big screen. All signatures were delivered to President Obama right before his State of the Union address.More than 150.000 signatures from all over the world were delivered to President Obama and the campaign spread through tens of thousands of YouTube views, Facebook updates, blogs and tweets. Sweden’s largest TV channel SVT and Sweden’s national radio SR also reported about it.
