Background

2023 hit Aussie households hard as the cost of living crisis reached record highs. Instead of the usual festive cheer and anticipation, people were anxious about whether they could have the usual Christmas spread. Financial savviness was more important than ever as Christmas rolled around.

Australians needed some reprieve from the pressure to overspend on big ticket items, so we celebrated all the little things that make a Christmas spread feel special. The brussels sprouts. The potato gratin. Aunty Jane’s three bean salad. These are what make Christmas feel like Christmas. And they don’t break the bank. So ALDI delivered side dishes in spades.

Execution

The film celebrates every man, woman, and potato who put their heart and soul into sides. Because Christmas lunch is made with the utmost love and care. And what’s Christmas without some tone-deaf singing? A festive rendition of the 80s hit, The Time of my Life, drives the action. And a liberal pouring of magical realism dials up the silliness.

Outcome

Last year, soaring inflation resulted in Christmas lunch costing $55.15 more than the identical meal in 2021. This year not only have grocery prices continued to rise, but with dwindled savings buffers and record-breaking interest rate rises, many household budgets are worse off than ever before.

So we encouraged Aussies to 'Go Big on the Little Things' and go big they did.

We saw growth in weekly sales, a whopping increase in Christmas week sales, massive growth in increase in transactions per store, a +4-point increase in ALDI as the First Choice for the Christmas shop, and +10-point increase for ‘fun to shop at Christmas’.
