Background

Burger King is always trying new ways to connect with the gaming world. So, when news broke that a viral McDonald’s ordering kiosk hacked to run a video game was faked, it was the perfect moment for us to spring into action.

Idea

There’s a trend in the gaming world to run video games on all kinds of weird devices. From microwaves, to believe us, pregnancy tests. Gamers hack any screen they can. And when someone hacked a McDonald’s kiosk to run video games on it, the internet went crazy. But then came the big disappointment: the picture was fake.

As a long supporter of gaming, Burger King couldn’t let gamers down. So, in partnership with Call of Duty, we invited people to play on our own kiosks. Only this time, for real.

Strategy

In partnership with Call of Duty, we invited gamers to play on our kiosks. They got to play Modern Warfare 2 during the game’s launch week and those who completed the game’s mission got a limited-edition meal and an exclusive in-game skin.

Execution

We hacked our own ordering kiosks from different markets to give gamers the chance to play Modern Warfare 2 during the game’s launch week. An army of gamers came to our restaurants, and in a week we had more than 11,000 minutes played. Overall, Burger King visits went up, sales went up, buzz went up, and no gamers were let down.

Outcome

Within hours, our kiosk hack was the talk of the gaming community. By running the most awaited game of the year on our kiosks, we sold more than 720,000 meals and garnered more than $26 million in earned media.
