The film begins with two Minecraft avatars meeting a very special character who offers them a box. Inside they find a YouTube red music disc that plays a Minecraft-themed version of Starship’s hit “We Built This City.” From there, we watch as 30+ YouTube Creators start building a city, nodding to Minecraft experiences and events that have played out on YouTube over the years. Each scene is filled with Easter eggs for the community to discover.

Minecraft is a game that centers around building with blocks. Over the years, fans have built all kinds of structures and experiences on YouTube. The film pays homage to all the things that they’ve created with a special Minecraft-themed version of the Starship song “We Built This City.” Featuring the most famous Creators, each frame is filled with Easter eggs for fans to find and share. The film celebrates the lore and culture that Minecraft fans have created on YouTube.

We wanted to select a song that celebrated the community, nodded to their achievements, and leaned into the core mechanics of the game. “We Built This City” by Starship gave us all that and more. By changing some lyrics to speak the language of Minecraft, we were able to draw the audience in and even have some of our top Creators add their own vocal cameos. The song was put on YouTube Shorts where fans put their own spin on the classic track.
