BriefWithProjectedOutcomes

Every second breath we take comes from the oceans. Today, pollution and climate change put our oceans and marine life at greater risk than ever before. However, many people don’t recognize the connection between ocean health and humanity’s survival.

With outdated research tools and unreliable data about this growing threat, our science community is falling behind.

We told the story of how scientists and researchers can deploy emerging technologies, in a way that had never been done before, to truly have an impact on issues facing our planet.

CampaignDescription

Every second breath we take comes from the oceans. Today, pollution and climate change put our oceans and marine life at greater risk than ever before. However, many people don’t recognize the connection between ocean health and humanity’s survival.

With outdated research tools and unreliable data about this growing threat, our science community is falling behind.

We told the story of how scientists and researchers can deploy emerging technologies, in a way that had never been done before, to truly have an impact on issues facing our planet.

Execution

Our documentary and social campaign brought these serious issues to light and ignited interest in our environment.

We created short Facebook videos which introduced viewers to the main characters of the film.

The beauty of the landscape came to life through a combination of gifs, photography, and bite-sized videos on Instagram, establishing the relationship between our technology and surrounding wildlife.

We engaged tech influencers/enthusiasts on Twitter with behind-the-scenes videos and imagery which showcased our key technologies and how they advanced ocean research.

In tandem with the launch of the film, we worked with The New York Times to launch an interactive feature piece, which elevated the mission to a global audience and gave viewers an in-depth look into the story, technology, and environmental problems we were helping solve.

The launch of our hero film at the end of the campaign brought the program together through an emotional, cross-platform story.

Outcome

Our campaign was a success, capturing the attention of the media and fans on social. Our films garnered a 50% higher view rate compared to the YouTube industry average.

The campaign increased our primary key performance indicator (Intel as an innovation leader) by 16%, while also garnering 43 million social impressions and 282 million media impressions.

Strategy

Our ocean’s health is changing rapidly. But the main tools scientists use for research haven’t changed for decades:

-Biopsy arrows, which harms the very animal the research was intended to protect

-Manual analysis of photographs, months after they were taken (often by recreational whale watchers)

These methods don’t yield the repeatable data needed to create patterns, understand trends, and conduct analysis on whale migration routes, procreation and health.

Assumptions and educated guesses were guiding one of the most important studies on the planet -- and that’s not exactly hard science. Intel knew they could change the face of ocean research with emerging technologies by capturing accurate volumetric and biological data right there on the boat.

That hard science is exactly what the whale research community needed to escalate the plight of whales - and its impact on humanity - into the ranks of the global climate conversation, where it belongs.

Synopsis

Most people still think about Intel as an ingredient brand. Our goal was to demonstrate how Intel technology powers innovation, beyond the personal computer. It can even transform the way the scientific community studies and solves the world’s most serious problems.

We partnered with Parley for the Oceans, a leading organization for ocean conservation and advocacy, to reimagine the way researchers study the connection between the health of our oceans, our planet, and the ultimate survival of humanity.

The results of this expedition are revolutionizing the way the scientific community is studying our oceans.
