CampaignDescription

When you think about climate change, melting ice caps usually come to mind. What most people don’t know is that our oceans and the marine life inhabiting it are at risk, too.

To raise awareness to these issues, we set off on an expedition unlike any other. Intel tech experts were teamed up with marine biologists, now equipped with state of the art drones and artificial intelligence, to change whale research forever.

These new tools helped marine researchers gain insights into some of the biggest issues facing our planet. As a result, a research process that typically took months was accomplished in real-time.

A mission like this had never been attempted before, and it set a strong precedent for the use of emerging technology in climate research.

Execution

Our documentary and social campaign brought these serious issues to light, and ignited interest in our environment.

We created short Facebook videos which introduced viewers to the main characters of the film.

The beautiful landscape came to life by combining gifs, photography, and bite-sized videos on Instagram, establishing the relationship between our technology, the science community, and the surrounding wildlife.

We engaged tech influencers on Twitter with behind-the-scenes videos and imagery which showcased our key technologies and how they advanced ocean research.

In tandem with the launch of the film, we worked with The New York Times to launch an interactive feature piece, elevating the mission to a global audience and giving viewers an in-depth look into the story, technology, and environmental problems we were helping solve.

The launch of our hero film at the end of the campaign brought the program together through an emotional, cross-platform story.

Outcome

Our campaign was a success, capturing the attention of the media and fans on social. Our films garnered a 50% higher view rate compared to the YouTube industry average.

The campaign increased our primary key performance indicator (Intel as an innovation leader) by 16%, while also garnering 43 million social impressions and 282 million media impressions.

Relevancy

Can Artificial Intelligence, a couple of scientists, and whale snot help save our oceans? Turns out, they just might.

In 2017, we led a breakthrough expedition to better understand the connection between whale health, ocean health, and the future of our planet, using Intel technology.

By giving scientists unprecedented access to cutting edge tools, we created an engaging story demonstrating what our technology is capable of in the right hands.

The documentary we created brought this story, and the way emerging technology can help solve the serious problems facing our oceans, to the world's attention.

Strategy

As Intel is moving beyond computer chips and data centers to gain share of mind in emerging technologies, it was important to tell our innovation story in way that connected to our audience at a deeper level. We couldn’t just talk about algorithms, artificial intelligence and drones.

We had to tell a story about the fate of humanity.

Through the expedition we demonstrated how whale health is correlated to the health of our planet: what happens to whales eventually happens to humans.

We wanted to hit that idea home in a personal way, and convince people that advancing whale research with emerging technologies wasn’t just beneficial for whales, it was critical to our own survival. Every second breath we take comes from our oceans, and without the right tools to study ocean health, our understanding would remain in the dark ages.

Synopsis

Most people still think about Intel as an ingredient brand. Our goal was to demonstrate how Intel technology powers innovation, beyond the personal computer. It can even transform the way the scientific community studies and solves the world’s most serious problems.

We partnered with Parley for the Oceans, a leading organization for ocean conservation and advocacy, to reimagine the way researchers study the connection between the health of our oceans, our planet, and the ultimate survival of humanity.

The results of this expedition are revolutionizing the way the scientific community is studying our oceans.
