Background
CRTA is a Robotics Lab within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture. This newly opened department is responsible for innovations such as RONNA, a robotic system for neurosurgical applications.
The task was to create a visual identity for CRTA. The solution needed to reflect its aim – to become a reference centre for research, development and educational activities in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.
Describe the creative idea
INTERSPECIES COLLABORATION
The new visual identity CRTA was developed by using an innovative AI technology. The new look evolved from AI-processed students’ handwriting leading to various data sets as inputs for the final design. The designer played with RONNA’s unique handwriting, brain surgery trajectory, and other data. After all, that is what humans are good at.
The identity was created as a result of collaboration between real and artificial intelligence, and successful integration of a new species into the working environment.
CRTA’s target are primarily students, and secondary scholars and organisations. Students are a part of the development of the visual identity and RONNA’s learning process itself is basis for the elements used in design.
Describe the execution
At first the institution’s name-writing was assigned to RONNA (a dual-arm robotic neuro navigation system). But RONNA was not able to write. A bunch of students were then called to rescue who wrote the name of the institution in their own handwriting, under the watchful “eye” of RONNA, upon which RONNA developed its own handwriting. The resulting information was processed into a plethora of visual data for designer to play with. He used point, line and plane interpretation based in AI feedback and developed CRTA’s identity and key visuals.
List the results
Visual identity reflects CRTA’s aim to become a reference centre for research, development and educational activities in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence.
Together, man and AI created an exciting and unconventional visual identity showing what CRTA is all about - collaboration between real and artificial intelligence.
CRTA’s visual identity was covered in following media:
Science magazine - arXiv.org - Cornell University:
“As CRTA embodies a state-of-the-art venue for robotics research, the 'interspecies' approach was used to accentuate the importance of human-robot collaboration which is at the core of the newly opened Center, illustrating the potential of reciprocal and amicable relationship that humans could have with technology.“
