CampaignDescription
It's not only impossibly, but also inappropriate of my to attempt to analyse or explain the motifs of the video, in the light of David passing it's meaning possibly became more clear than at the time of launch.
Execution
Filmed over a total of four days in a studio in New York, and in Bucharest Romania. Edit and post production took around six weeks to complete.
Outcome
Rather remarkable. With the television broadcast and then the video being posted online we were featured in most national media across the world both online and in news. Much discussion followed not only by the fans, but by music and culture lovers everywhere.
The youtube video has had tens of millions of hits, and since David's passing the impact has been even greater as the video was widely heralded as his swan song; his final poetic visual expression.
Relevancy
It's a seminal piece of work for one of the most influential artist we've ever had. It was created with an enormous amount of influence and collaboration with the artist himself.
Strategy
We didn't really have one. It was premiered on Sky to 21million viewers in an exercise that was the first time for a song ever to be revealed for the first time with a music video in a global television premier.
At the exact same time we had a physical premier of the video for his fans at the Niethawk Cinema in Brooklyn NY, after which director Johan Renck answered questions from fans in a live stream on the Vice online platform.
Synopsis
David Bowie "Blackstar" is a ten minute film that David and director Johan Renck collaborated on over the period of about eight weeks prior to filming. It was to launch David's last and final album with the same title.
