CampaignDescription

This film for Voodoo in My Blood explores notions of control between humans and the technology we covet. It was inspired by the notorious ‘subway scene’ in Possession, the extreme and bizarre horror masterpiece (a favourite of Ringan Ledwidge’s), and intimidating floating metal orb from 1979 cult-classic horror, Phantasm.

Execution

From treatment to delivery the entire execution took 3 months, with a one-day shoot somewhere in the middle. The decision to place the media on Vevo came from so many requests to host the exclusive for the launch and therefore we felt this was the fairest way to share with everyone. Vevo allowed sites to embed the film onto their own pages and we would be able to keep track of the views, shares and comments. As well as having a very popular presence on social media and international online press for the first week, the film was viewed just under 3 million times. It has recently been nominated at the Berlin Music Video Awards festival.

Outcome

The launch of this music video received an incredible amount of attention right away, with the biggest music critics and platforms all reporting on it in the same day. The impressive collaboration between three such successes of their craft, the artists - Massive Attack, the director - Ringan Ledwidge and the actress - Rosumund Pike, ensured attention from many different angles. It was positively reported on in titles such as Rolling Stone, Dazed, Noisey, Promo News, Shots, even Perez Hilton. As well as having a very popular presence on social media for the first week, Ringan Ledwidge gave several requested interviews and the film was viewed just under 3 million times on the official Vevo channel. It has recently been nominated at the Berlin Music Video Awards festival.

Relevancy

Music Video is an increasingly relevant and interesting medium once again. It is everything a lot of branded content would love to be. Craved, disruptive, engaging, highly creative, original, authentic, brave… and at its heart, it’s also marketing. This film for Voodoo in My Blood feels extremely modern and relevant yet employs the craft so often missing from modern music video. The casting of Rosamund Pike in the lead role was for two principal reasons, firstly the part required an actress with incredible skill and ability and secondly, the fact she is an Oscar Nominee helped the film travel.

Strategy

This film for Voodoo in My Blood combined the craft and skill from the undeniable musical talent of Massive Attack, whose music is always highly anticipated by their global following, and the direction and experience of award winning director Ringan Ledwidge, who devised the idea and made all the design and creative decisions to ensure the film made as much of an impact as possible. The biggest of these decisions is the casting of Rosamund Pike in the lead role. This was for two principal reasons, firstly the part required an actress with incredible skill and ability and secondly, the fact she is an Oscar Nominee helped the film travel.

Synopsis

Massive Attack released the ‘Ritual Spirit’ EP in January 2016, which coincided with a sold out European Tour. They have a rich visual tradition both in terms of music video and concert visuals. Thematically, the tour is concerned with the amoral nature and pervasiveness of much of modern media and also the monopolistic domination of our hearts and minds by tech behemoths. This film for 'Voodoo in My Blood' feels extremely modern and relevant yet employs the craft so often missing from modern music video, a truly interesting point. The film was distributed globally and was for whomever cared to look, which was of course helped by the casting of Oscar nominated actress Rosamund Pike, die hard Massive Attack fans and appreciators of music videos and the visual storytellings of award-winning director Ringan Ledwidge.
