CampaignDescription

Based on classic Dutch Masters, the story is a simple parlour game where a series of props are presented in turn, each with a first name subtitle. The viewer must guess the last name, represented as a prop, to complete the name of a famous celebrity. The names are categorised and presented as 4 vignettes passing through household items, food, the Animal Kingdom to the great Outdoors.

Execution

The original short film concept was conceived a few years ago, stemming from a university anecdote about a student who owned a plant named Robert. In August 2016 the pair decided make the film as a collaboration in their own time. The story was written by George Wu and the art direction was inspired by previous still life work by John Short. Filming took place over two weekends - the first for the landscape items such as a hill and a cave. The team drove from London to Ramsgate looking for very specific landmarks to keep the flow of the story. The second weekend comprised of all the interior shots. The edit and grade were completed in a week with the total turn around being 6 weeks. The label enjoyed the video so much they acquired the film to use for the new single Luminous Freedom.

Outcome

The video enjoyed wide online press from Shots, Booooooom, It's Nice That, Grafik Magazine and Promo News, In December 2015 it showcased at BUG No.49 at the BFI and recently acquired by Channel 4 Random Acts for use on television in 2016.

Relevancy

The piece is a short film and photographic series currently being used as the music video for 'Luminous Freedom' by New Build on Sunday Best Records. The band includes Hot Chip members Al Doyle and Felix Martin and composer Tom Hopkins and plays off a series of visual puns which evoke famous faces from Brad Pitt to Roald Dahl. Broken into four acts, the piece humorously brings together pop culture and history, pulling inspiration from Dutch Master paintings.

Strategy

The video premiered on Noisy in October 2015. It was launched in conjunction with a competition on social media, the winner chosen from those who can correctly guess all 42 names.

Synopsis

'Luminous Freedom' is the music video for the final single from 'Pour it on', the second album by New Build on Sunday Best Records / Domino Publishing Company. Originally conceived as a short film to be the first collaboration between director George Wu and photographer John Short.
