“Good Night Paola” is a short film about the struggle to reach the ‘dream state’, with a narrative based on the 4 stages of sleep, each representing a chapter in Paola’s breathtaking come-back story. Antonini, who lost her leg in a car accident in 2014, relives her own story for the first time, through nightmarish moments on her path to fulfilling her dream.

Cultural/Context information for the jury

Sleep deprivation is a symptom of our modern lifestyles. Enter Midea air conditioner with Midea Smart app for precise temperature control to help safeguard every stage of our sleep cycle. Dispelling all expectations and limitations of how an air con brand should introduce itself to new markets, Midea chose to tell this empowering yet comforting bedtime story, featuring Paola Antonini, a Brazilian model who lost her leg but not her dreams.

Tell the jury anything relevant about the cinematography.

The director sets the scene for Paola's story through a dreamlike narrative in 4 acts, each representing a sleep stage. Both set and cinematography can't be too realistic. Her journey towards her dream of becoming a model is centered on a stylized fashion runway, where red and blue tones alternate moments of heat and cool.

1st stage

- Bed flips to vertical, Paola floats effortlessly (with dolly).

- Runway was designed to reproduce the tension and heat in her career.

- Accident scene: car crashes on runway, changing her life forever.

2nd stage

- Hospital, backstage and Paola’s bedroom merge in one space.

3rd stage

- Empty backstage with dummy parts scattered around dramatize her struggle.

4th

- When the film reaches its climax, the camera surprises the audience with real footage from Paola’s past, linking her dream with reality.

- Paola floats seamlessly back into her bed on a sling.
