BriefWithProjectedOutcomes

The Resuscitation Council (UK) is the medical charity that produces the official UK guidelines for CPR that are followed by the NHS and all the first aid charities. Two representatives of the council were overseeing the production process at all time to ensure it was realistic and that the techniques are communicated correctly and clearly. Since it's launch LIFESAVER has been adopted as an official CPR teaching app by the Resuscitation Council.

CampaignDescription

In the UK thousands die every year after cardiac arrest or choking.  CPR education can improve significantly cardiac arrest survival rates, nevertheless the training for these skills is still dominated by techniques little changed since the 1970's.

LIFESAVER is a mobile app which fuses interactivity and film to teach CPR on a smartphone or tablet. You learn by doing, the app throws you in three emergency situations where it’s up to you to make the right decisions and save a life. It uses accelerometer to simulate the right techniques - user move the device up and down to perform CPR on cardiac arrest victim or move it sharply up to do the Heimlich manoeuvre.

After the release of the Lifesaver app, copies were distributed to every school in the UK by the Resuscitation Council. It’s been downloaded more than 80,000 times and received worldwide recognition in tradition. In recent tests at South Bristol Community Hospital in England, confidence in doing CPR rose from 3.7 out of 10 before playing Lifesaver to 7.4 out of 10 after it. And all those who played it said it made them more likely, or much more likely, to attempt CPR in a real emergency.

ClientBriefOrObjective

The ultimate goal of LIFESAVER is clear: To save lives.

To improve cardiac arrest survival rates, we teamed up with the Resuscitation Council UK to create a tool that not only teaches CPR, but prepares users for the urgency of real life medical emergency. Tool that can make a real difference within local communities; from Secondary schooling right through to further education, that is easily accessible everywhere and can be used by all ages.

Execution

LIFESAVER is a crisis simulator. The app throws you in three emergency situations in which users assume the role of someone walking past and are forced to make immediate decisions on whether to help and what to do next. Each short film begins with a character, engaged in an everyday activity, suddenly collapsing. The immersive experience lasts between 8 and 12 minutes, and users must perform each stage of CPR, from tilting the victim's head by dragging or swiping, to shaking their iPad up and down to get their heart started again. LIFESAVER uses accelerometer to simulate the right techniques, so users can learn by doing, not just observing.

In the end of each experience, you sense the thrill of saving a life.

Outcome

After the release of the LIFESAVER app, copies were distributed to every school in the UK by the Resuscitation Council. The app has been downloaded more than 80,000 times receiving positive endorsement by users across different social media channels. The app has received recognition not only from the Resuscitation Council, but other health organisations - NHS, The Hearth Foundation, St John Ambulance and more, and featured both in mainstream and industry media, ranging from The Huffington Post and Daily Express to Creativity and Shots.

Most importantly, in recent tests at South Bristol Community Hospital in England, confidence in doing CPR rose from 3.7 out of 10 before playing Lifesaver to 7.4 out of 10 after it. And all those who played it said it made them more likely, or much more likely, to attempt CPR in a real emergency.

Strategy

To give people the confidence to step in and help in case of medical emergency, we needed to create a tool powerful enough to simulate crisis situations, so they feel prepared and skilled to save a life. However, at the same time it had to be easily accessible so everyone can use it.

The solution is a mobile app, available for free both on iOS & Android. We fused interactive gameplay and live action footage to transform tablets and smartphones into vital training aids and used technology to provide unique and effective way to give someone the skills to save a life.

Synopsis

Each year in the UK an estimated 60,000 people have an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Sadly, less than 10% of them survive.

CPR education can improve significantly cardiac arrest survival rates, nevertheless the training for these skills has changed very little since the 1970's. To this day, CPR courses are conducted with large groups of people learning the techniques by observing an instructor perform CPR on a plastic dummy. Failing to recreate the urgency of a medical emergency, these courses teach the right techniques, but don't give people the confidence to step in case of real life crisis.
