CampaignDescription

The directors designed and directed a fittingly striking Opening Title Sequence for 2015’s OFFF Porto, a festival of Post-Digital Creation Culture, which describes itself as “an open community to all those who seek inspiration, creation and innovation.”

They set out to create a journey through the city following some colourful and quirky CG characters whose playful nature contrasts with the dark urban atmosphere, shot in black and white 5D.

In approaching the project, the directors wanted to create an original opening title, more like a music video than a classic motion graphic piece.

Execution

The team wanted to create an original opening title, more like a music video than a classic motion graphic piece.

They created a journey through the city following some colourful and quirky CG characters whose playful nature contrasts with the dark urban atmosphere, shot in black and white 5D.

The team then animated and directed several otherworldly CG bubble creatures, which although entirely animated nevertheless have a distinctly human quality.

They navigate through their gritty urban environments, filmed with live action clips shot in London.

Motion capture was used alongside the CG bubble men who were 3D-tracked into live action sequences, giving a sense of realism and humanity to the quirky characters.

The piece was played to all festival attendees and delegates, including inspiring figures from the industry and the content was not shown until the end of the festival.

Outcome

The work ran as the title sequence at OFFF Porto 2015.

This was the first time that OFFF had been present in Porto.

The event was held in an old art deco cinema, which had been out of use for about 20 years making the environment both epic and atmospheric, with a derelict feel and huge installations.

The piece was played to all festival attendees and delegates, including inspiring figures from the industry and the content was not shown until the end of the festival – something OFFF have become famous for doing.

Awaiting the opening titles at the end of the festival evoked a real sense of anticipation amongst the audience to see the creation itself.

Strategy

In approaching the project, bif wanted to create an original opening title, more like a music video than a classic motion graphic piece.

bif created and then directed several otherworldly CG bubble creatures, which although entirely animated nevertheless have a distinctly human quality.

They navigate through their gritty urban environments, filmed with live action clips shot in London, and go about daily tasks such as going to the shops and taking public transport, but as night falls they multiply and begin to dance in the streets.

Their luminosity in the nocturnal scenes has an utterly enchanting effect.
