BriefExplanation
Payphone Bank is an OS that turns 13,000 already existing pay phones across low-income areas of Colombia into micro-savings terminals for the unbanked population.
With Payphone Bank users are able to create their own micro-savings accounts and use them to acquire basic goods and services and even access micro-loans. All this can be done through the pay phones in their neighborhoods.
EntrySummary
In Colombia 8 million people don't have access to the banking system due to their low income averaging 3.5 dollars a day.
This cuts them off from many basic goods and services which could substantially improve their quality of life.
Most of their earnings come in the form of coins obtained through ambulant sales. This makes it hard to acquire a saving discipline and exposes low-income citizens to crime.
There are 13,000 pay phones already installed throughout Colombia, and they are still a crucial communication tool for the low-income population.
