Execution

The screenings were developed in partnership with the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne, through a series of trials at OneSight Clinics in Mornington Island and inner city schools.

The app is a result of a collaborative result between the author/illustrator, the app developers, the creative team, the Saatchi & Saatchi and the children's eye specialists at the University of Melbourne.

Outcome

The Penny the Pirate One Sight screening has become the standard children's eye screening tool and has allowed the charity to operate clinics faster and more accurately than ever before.

This year, Penny is on track to help 25,000 children with previously undiagnosed vision problems in areas where it has historically been extremely difficult for OneSight to reach.

Due to overwhelming demand for One Sight screenings the app is also being offered to schools and community centres, outside of the charity's current operating capacity.

Strategy

OneSight is a charity which provides free screenings to remote indigenous communities, underprivileged school children and low socio-economic community members. All three groups require OneSight volunteers to frequently screen the vision of children. The current process requires volunteers to get trained on a series of complex screening tools and charts which are designed for adults. When applied to children, these mundane screenings often lead to disengagement and false results while also causing the charity's to spend its time training one-off volunteers.

To solve these issues, we created a storybook app which doubles as a screening tool. This can be operated by any adult, without previous training. As a screening tool for children, the app is more accurate, faster to operate and far more engaging than any previous OneSight method. It can also be downloaded by any child care worker to operate a OneSight quality screening anywhere in Australia.
