Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The film starts in a world resembling a fantasy game. Rows of soldiers are arranged perfectly within a circular fortress. The monotony of this playless world is broken by an object falling from the sky. It’s a DualStone–a stone controller. It flies into a soldier, who transforms into a playful-looking avatar.

The swarm of armed soldiers attempts to surround him and limit his movements. Undeterred, he uses humorous antics to outwit them. Wielding a playful mind rather than weapons, he challenges a soldier to rock, paper, and scissors; rides a bizarre bicycle; and glides across the ground in a move that defies physics.

Finally, he knocks down the fortress gate, opening their world to play. As he leaves, he tosses the controller to the soldiers, who follow his lead. Outside is an open world of undiscovered fun where giant monsters roam and spaceships zoom overhead.

It’s the world of PlayStation.

Cultural / Context information for the jury

“Play Has No Limits”, PlayStation’s global tagline that sums up our DNA of pushing the boundary of play, was relatively unknown in Japan. Our mission was to familiarize the local market with it.

We partnered with Kenshi Yonezu, one of Japan’s hottest artists, having over 6 million subscribers on YouTube, more than any other Japanese musician. His playful and universal songs push the boundary of the music scene in Japan. He’s also a gamer who’s loved PlayStation from childhood and has once stated that PlayStation games significantly influenced his imagination.

To celebrate our shared spirit of play, we launched a branded film featuring his new song “POP SONG,” written for PlayStation, and an original character designed and portrayed by Kenshi Yonezu himself. The film follows the character who pushes the boundaries by wielding a playful mind rather than weapons, acting out the spirit of Play Has No Limits.
