ClientBriefOrObjective
In Colombia 92% of visually impaired people have low incomes and the smartphones they can buy are basic entry levels that do not respond entirely to accessibility apps. Apps in turn, need internet connections and the majority of this impaired segment cannot pay for data plans.
As time goes by, smartphones are replacing the old traditional cellphones in the market, and without buttons, it is almost impossible for the blind people to use a phone on a daily basis.
How can the visually impaired use the smartphones in the same way we do?
Execution
In Colombia 92% of visually impaired people have low incomes and the smartphones they can buy are basic entry levels that do not respond entirely to accessibility apps. Without buttons it is almost impossible for the blind to use a phone.
That´s why we create The Real Touch Screen, simple screen protectors transformed into Braille navigation maps for the most frequent commands in entry level cellphones:
Dial a number, Write text messages, Order a cab service, Listen to music and Ask for help by calling the local police.
Implementation
The Real Touch Screen.
The CRAC (Center for Adult Visually Impaired Rehabilitation in Colombia) create simple screen protectors transformed into Braille navigation maps for the most frequent commands in entry level cellphones:
Dial a number, Write text messages, Order cab service, Listen to music and Ask for help by calling the local police.
The Real Touch Screen has allowed the visually impaired to join the use of entry level smartphones with touch screen technology. It can be used in cellphones with deficient accessibility systems and even on older phones like the iPhone 3 model.
Outcome
The Real Touch Screen has allowed the visually impaired, who are currently in Rehabilitation at the CRAC (Center for Adult Visually Impaired Rehabilitation in Colombia with around 150 people) to join the use of entry level smartphones with touch screen technology. It can be used in cellphones with deficient accessibility systems and even on older smartphones like the iPhone 3.
Every blind and visually impaired person in Colombia has to join the CRAC at some point of their life. Hopefully, the Real Touchscreen will be in every blind person´s smartphone of the country.
