Overview

Background:

WePresent Magazine is a biannual printed publication created by WePresent and WeTransfer.

Create a magazine that consists of three different versions of the same issue, designed by three global design talents: Pentagram partner Paula Scher (NY, USA), Eike König and his team at HORT (Berlin, Germany), and Turbo (Amman, Jordan).

WePresent no.5 aimed to give creative freedom to three designers to create three different issues of the same magazine. For this issue, WePresent’s other goal was to have the issue distributed and sold in shops. It is now for sale in Athenaeum Boekhandel (Amsterdam) and MagCulture (London). The magazine was also distributed as part of Stack Magazines in December 2022. All profits from the magazine's sale were directed to The Supporting Act Foundation by WeTransfer, which awards bursaries and grants for creating better opportunities in the arts for marginalized communities and individuals.

Tell the jury about the illustration.

For Issue 5, WePresent magazine handed over their stories to three well-known designers, who approached the process in their unique ways. Eike König of the Hort design studio explored the ways magazine conventions can be pushed beyond their limits, with a multifaceted and collaborative design shared among members of his Berlin-based studio. From Amman, Jordan, studio Turbo imprinted the magazine with intricate playfulness, taking a different visual direction for each article. Lastly, Pentagram Partner Paula Scher surprised us from New York by framing her magazine around her dog Mimi, who became both a theme and a contributor.

Is there any cultural context that would help the jury understand how this work was perceived by people in the country where it ran?

The magazine celebrates various forms of creativity across film, music, literature, photography, and illustration, demonstrating a diverse and worldly perspective. The magazine targets readers interested in art, design, and culture, as well as aspiring creators and entrepreneurs. It was available for purchase at various physical magazine retailers in London and Amsterdam, as well as through the online magazine platform and retailer Stack, indicating a widespread global availability.
