Why is this work relevant for Innovation?
The NOSEiD app is comprised of two elements (i) Nose scanning and (ii)Matching. Working with Google ML Kit, we trained an Object Detection Model to identify the presence of a dog’s nose in real time from a Smart Phone camera and gained understanding of what detail is required to create a nose scan. To create a NOSEiD, we capture individual details of the nose such as size, shape and texture, translating this into a unique profile so it can be stored and recalled from the database.
Background
The NOSEiD app is a Biometric Dog Identification System that recognises a dog by scanning their nose.
Taking inspiration from facial recognition, NOSEiD patent pending technology recognises a dog’s nose and creates a detailed 3D ‘scan’ of their individual features in real time. Using Intelligent Matching, the NOSEiD app identifies if the nose is associated with a dog on its database. All that’s needed to create a NOSEiD is a Smart Phone camera and the NOSEiD app, making it simple and cost free for anyone to register their dog.
The first use of NOSEiD will be within an app to reunite lost dogs with their owners. To register, owners scan their dog’s nose and create a profile with the dog and owner details. If the registered dog subsequently goes missing, the dog finder or shelter can scan the dog’s nose to identify it and get in touch with its owner.
Describe the idea
10-million pets in the US go missing every year and too few make it back home. Just 3% of pets in the US are microchipped, and the process of reuniting a lost dog with its owner is time-consuming, fragmented and more laced with chance than you might originally think. Through research, we discovered that every dog’s nose was as unique as a fingerprint. And, that we could train a machine learning model to scan, store and recognise the unique features of a dog’s nose using just a smartphone camera.
We put this technology at the centre of the NOSEiD app, enabling dog owners to scan their dog and create its unique profile. Should the dog go missing, the owner can alert other app users and shelters in the area. And if the dog is found, the “Finder” or Shelter can immediately determine the dog’s identity and get in touch

Describe the innovation / technology
The NOSEiD app is comprised of two elements (i) Nose scanning and (ii)Matching. Working with Google ML Kit, we trained an Object Detection Model to identify the presence of a dog’s nose in real time from a Smart Phone camera and gained understanding of what detail is required to create a nose scan. When a scan is taken of a found dog, the app uses Intelligent Matching to compare this nose scan and profile details of the dog inputted by the “Finder” to identify a match with dogs on the database. The NOSEiD app is being rolled out across the US City by City and is available as an iOS and Android app and a web app for people in Nashville
