Overview

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

Little Big e-Motion introduces an exceptional mobility experience provided to children suffering in a hospital bed via EAVC technology.

By reducing stress level, it will affect the outcome of the treatment.

It will turn the dreaded experience in hospitals into a pleasant one.

In the future, Hyundai Motor Group will continue to provide exceptional experiences to customers with mobility and new technologies without space constraints.

We hope that small cars for children will be the first step toward a new era of mobility.

Background

It may look like just an ordinary toy car on the outside. Still, Little Big e-Motion helps children via EAVC(Emotion Adaptive Vehicle Control) technology, which measures passengers' facial expressions, heart rate, and breathing biological signals to identify passengers' emotional and psychological conditions. EAVC technology also controls the five senses that can be felt in a vehicle, providing an optimized environment for the passenger's emotional or psychological state.

The Little Big e-Motion focuses on realizing the "human-centered progress" pursued by Hyundai Motor Group. Little Big e-Motion also helps children by applying EAVC technology to mobility, relieving the fear of children suffering from the disease, and communicating the condition of children patients to the medical staff. Besides, Little Big e-Motion will be sent to hospitals to help treat them, collect emotion recognition data and use it for future driver emotion recognition and mobility research.

Describe the idea

Stress is an essential factor that affects pediatric patients' willingness for treatment and even treatment results. However, the hospital is a scary and fearful place for every child.

Hyundai Motor Group and SJD Barcelona Children's Hospital decided to initiate a project to help these children via EAVC technology, which will be actively used in future mobility and self-driving cars to secure drivers' safety and mental stability.

So, If a typical children's toy car is simply to entertain children, Little Big e-Motion can be Therapy Car using this emotion recognition technology. The mini car tried to apply bio-signal measurement technology to identify emotions and physical conditions and help children get refreshed by various entertainment functions.

Therefore, when a child moves to an operating room, using Little Big e-Motion, not a hospital bed, they can relieve anxiety. Little Big e-Motion helps turn the scary journey into a fun play process.

What were the key dates in the development process?

We collaborated with various research institutes and universities at home and abroad to develop Little Big e-Motion. Hyundai Motor Group drew research tasks through industry-academic cooperation with MIT Media Lab in 2019 and developed EAVC technology and detailed new technologies.

Together with Hyundai Motor Group, developing the technology into EAVC technology, designing the car, selecting and stabilizing five core functions applied to Little Big e-Motion took throughout the year. After the film was shot in September 2020, the campaign globally on-aired on YouTube for a month from December 15th 2020~January 14th, 2021.

Before the film's main launch, we uploaded 2 teaser films featuring the making & shipping of Little Big e-Motion on various online owned media to draw maximum attention.

And after the film on-aired on YouTube, Hyundai Motor Group Global Branches aided organic promotion by uploading our film on various owned media channels.

Describe the innovation / technology

Little Big e-Motion tried to apply bio-signal measurement technology to identify emotions and physical conditions and help children refresh by introducing various functions.

The human body reacts variously depending on emotions, and the easiest way to know is via facial expression. Little Big e-Motion recognizes a child's face with a camera and understands the emotional state. And it measures heart rate and breathing through a heart rate monitoring sensor mounted on the seat belt. Also, the stress index can be calculated through wearable devices that measure skin conductivity.

Emotion Adaptive Lighting, which shines inside and outside the vehicle, serves as a mirror to show the child's mind. If the child feels scared or has high-stress levels, the external light illuminates a red LED to inform the medical staff.

Little Big e-Motion also reacts in two ways to heal an anxious child. The first is a mild form, with a Breathing Exercise Belt with an air pocket wrapped around the child. The seat belt functions to repeat expansion and contraction like a breath you can feel when holding a dog. It also helps to child to breathe more calmly.

Describe the expectations / outcome

1) Impressions : Approximately 82,990,670

2) Views : Approximately 26,456,717

3) Positive Engagement: Over 196,004 Globally

4) Performance : 28% more exposure / 3510% more positive responses / 19% more views achieved compared to media cost execution.

5) Organic PR: More than 82 domestic media outlets and more than 51 reports have been made on the Little Big E-Motion project in various countries around the world.

6) Scalability: Since the campaign launch until now (April 2021), 75 child patients have experienced our car, and 75 more are scheduled for the test. The research is half way through its progress. When it is finished, Little Big e-Motion can be enhanced and reproduced for bigger good.

*Hyundai Motor Group plans to continue fine-tuning its EAVC technology and hopes to expand the use of this next-generation technology in mobility devices in the future to enhance driver safety and well-being.
