Overview

Why is this work relevant for Innovation?

In the search for continuous improvement of water and its conservation, we found a solution that helps us improve water quality, without altering the activity of the different communities that, due to cultural heritage, have had for years, washing clothes in rivers. And with this product, we managed to turn their habit into a systematic chain of river cleaning.

Background

In the world, there are still 159 million people who depend on the surface or untreated water, such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams. Due to this and their cultural heritage, a significant percentage washes their clothes in the rivers. In Peru this heritage is attributed to its Inca origin, and doing this is also an opportunity for socialization among the women of the villages.

Unfortunately, the soap used to wash clothes contributes to the contamination of the river on which the entire community depends because it is the principal source of “drinkable” water, unconsciously causing various diseases.

Describe the idea

AWA: The soap that cleans the rivers is a product that seeks to replace traditional soaps for washing clothes. This soap contains microorganisms with a probiotic function capable of feeding on the pollutants of the rivers, and in this way, using a tradition that by cultural heritage have different communities, generate a new system for improving water quality.

What were the key dates in the development process?

To develop the soap, we had four main stages: The first was planning and research on various microorganisms that we could use, and that was adapted (09/2019). The next stage was the formulation and adaptation of the selected bacteria (02/2020). The following was the prototyping and testing of the product in two samples of controlled water from the river and the fish tank (08/2020). Finally, after two years of analysis, sampling, and changes in the initial prototype, we started with the mass production of the commercial product (01/2021)

Describe the innovation / technology

The soap is enriched with microorganisms with a probiotic function, which at the moment of detaching from the soap and falling into the water, adhere to the elements present at the bottom of the river, facilitating the proliferation of the organism, and thus begins to feed on the different pollutants like nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia.

It was composed of various microorganisms (a chemical formula that has been released for the use of different companies, governments, and organizations) Oils/butter, Sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, and water.

Describe the expectations / outcome

The long-term result is an improvement of up to 85% of the intervened water, this ensures an average of 6 months to a year the decrease in the proliferation of bacteria based on nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia.

The Project has a very scalable projection since integrating this microorganism into the formula of any current soap that is produced is viable both economically and technically. Today, with this soap we are not only improving the formulation of commercial laundry soap, but we are also helping hundreds of communities to have a better water quality. To develop the soap, we had four main stages: The first was planning and research on various microorganisms that we could use, and that was adapted (09/2019). The next stage was the formulation and adaptation of the selected bacteria (02/2020).In the early stages of development, our initial budget was $ 11,500 to research the formula.
