GEOMETRY ENCOMPASS, Mumbai / VASELINE / 2020
Overview
Credits
Write a short summary of what happens in the film.
The film encapsulates the journey of millions of devotees/pilgrims at the Kumbh festival, world's largest religious congregation. From walking barefoot for days to combating coarse terrains, to taking sacred dip in biting cold holy river, in order to absolve all their sins, these journeys are arduous, and each one, a testament of faith.
As we sampled Vaseline around the wide expanse of Kumbh, we enabled millions of devotees to complete their journey by healing atrocities of their skin, while overcoming mental and physical barriers. This film is a story of perseverance and strength, that kept them going.
We created an innovative stop-motion film with over 2,70,000 still-shots, taken by 10 photographers in three weeks. Each key-image was pre-planned to be part of one seamless journey. The sound-design was inspired by the myriad of activities at Kumbh, using specific indigenous instruments resulting in a score that brought alive the shared experience.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
India, a land of mystical geographies. There’s a god for every season and a religious journey for every reason. Pilgrims endure extreme harsh weather conditions, combat coarse terrains during religious journeys year on year.
Each journey, a testament to one’s faith.
The belief is:
The tougher, the journey,
The purer, the faith
While for decades, Vaseline has been perceived as a basic body care product, playing a very small role (either for chapped lips, cracked heels, or winter moisturization) in the skincare regime. With this campaign, Vaseline aimed to celebrate itself as an inevitable companion and enabler for their journeys. And because spiritual journeys take the centre stage in India, the festival of Kumbh was unmissable.
Tell the jury about the sound design.
We had to record and mix an almost raw lived-in quality of sound, that teleported the audience to Kumbh-festival.
A journey through the Kumbh-festival is an orchestra of various sounds, unique to India-
from the hustle-bustle of devotees
to sound of wooden handheld percussions,
from chants of Hindu saints
to chirping of artic seagulls at the holy river
not to forget, the almost hypnotic trans sounds of snake-charmers flute
It's a magical confluence of 100 such different sounds.
We had to go more by instinct than technique. To record, various unique sounds of Kumbh, we used 12 microphones, planted near the banks of river, across lanes, near Akaharas(where saints resided). Without resorting to stock sound-effects, we captured the most authentic sounds of Kumbh. After relentless pursuit, we curated a bespoke mix that captured the idiosyncrasies of Indian culture, the Hindu festival, and instruments that have never been explored before.
