Overview

Write a short summary of what happens in the film.

The realistic detail of PS4 Pro intensifies players’ emotional connection to their games. This film takes a powerful PlayStation moment and looks to make the audience experience the same heightened emotional state as the gamer.

In a world submerged in water, we see a book gently float through an empty metro carriage, a fish swimming outside its tank, a car floating off a highway. As a clock ticks backwards, we realise the water is slowly receding. Following the journey of the water in reverse, we see the levels descend further and further. Eventually the water flows backwards along a street, arriving at the entrance to an apartment building. It slowly ascends a staircase, before disappearing underneath a front door. We follow the stream to a single droplet rising upwards revealing the source – a tear from our player. He's overwhelmed by a powerful moment in Death Stranding on PS4 Pro.

Tell the jury about the visual effects and summarise any relevant challenges or techniques.

The thing with water is that you can’t cheat scale. The human eye can recognise the scale of the particle size in comparison to its surroundings. Therefore, because we wanted to use real water wherever possible whilst filming, we sometimes had to build life sized sets that we could flood for a convincing effect. This was particularly successful in the café, supermarket and apartment scenes and being able to use real water here really helped to sell the scenes with VFX assistance.
