Overview

Background

Today, despite its protective status, ? of the world's protected reserves are under threat from human activity.

In some regions of the world, deforestation is reaching unprecedented rates like the Amazon, for instance, where the deforestation rate in 2020 was the biggest in the decade.

It's hard to monitor and stop humans from destroying our forests, but we can stop the machines they use.

Describe the creative idea

In collaboration with companies and NGOs from all over the world, we created a Cyber Shield for our Forests. An open source software that restricts the use of heavy-duty vehicles in protected areas.

The code uses the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA): the largest assembly of data on the world's terrestrial and marine protected areas, containing more than 260,000 protected areas, with records covering 245 countries and territories throughout the world. It is updated on a monthly basis by governments, NGO's, landlords and community groups.

Using vehicle on-board GPS, the code detects when a protected area has been breached.

When a machine enters a protected area, the system automatically restricts its use and sends a message to entities responsible for the protected area's supervision.

The code is free and available to companies and governments.

Describe the strategy

CoC was born as a simple code for companies like Caterpillar or John Deer to incorporate into their machines operating systems. This would guarantee a long term solution.

Since most of the machines harming protected reserves today are models with 10 to 30 years old, we created a physical version of the Code: a small and low cost gps tracker that cuts the fuel pump of the machine in case of entering a protected area.

Since its launch, we've been in contact with governments and different organizations.

Governments can turn the CoC into a law, obliging all heavy machines operating near a protected area to have it.

Heavy duty Machines companies can implement the code into their new machines.

Companies can oblige all of its supply chain machines to have it installed.

Banking Institutions can give credit only to companies that have installed the CoC into their heavy machines.

Describe the execution

Code of Conscience was launched on Amazon Day, September 19, 2019 - with a film featuring the Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Raoni Metuktire at codeofconscience.org and YouTube.

The project earned global coverage on major media outlets, sparking the interest of private companies, governments and individuals.

As proof of concept, we recorded a pilot in Aire River natural reserve.

Benjamin Von Wong, the famous "artivist" invited us to speak about the project on a podcast and from that, we started receiving contacts from volunteers across the globe to help on the project.

Code of Conscience was one of the highlights at TEDx Blumenau

We had several conversations going in America, Europe, Asia and Pacific but they were paused due to Covid.

As next steps, we intend to start a parallel initiative to implement the Code on boats, so we can help supervise illegal fishing in sea and river protected areas.

List the results

We started implementing the Code in heavy machines from 3Tentos, one of the biggest Brazilian Agricultural companies.

A Latin America government just signed the implementation of the Code of Conscience on heavy machines, trucks and boats operating near the Amazon.

Two global manufacturers are discussing the implementation of the code on future machinery and government in Europe is interested in turning the Code into a law.
