Overview

Why is this work relevant for Creative Data?

It's hard to monitor and stop humans from destroying our forests, but data can stop the machines they use.

The Code of Conscience is a Cyber Shield for our Forests.

It uses the UN's World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA): the largest assembly of data on the world's terrestrial and marine protected areas.

Using vehicle on-board GPS, the code detects when a protected area has been breached.

When a machine enters a protected area, the system automatically restricts its use and sends a message to entities responsible for the protected area's supervision.

Background

Today, despite its protective status, ? of the world's protected reserves are under threat from human activity.

In some regions of the world, deforestation is reaching unprecedented rates like the Amazon, for instance, where the deforestation rate in 2020 was the biggest in the decade.

It's hard to monitor and stop humans from destroying our forests, but we can stop the machines they use.

Describe the creative idea / data solution

CoC was born as a simple code for companies like Caterpillar or John Deer to incorporate into their machines operating systems. This would guarantee a long term solution.

Since most of the machines harming protected reserves today are models with 10 to 30 years old, we created a physical version of the Code: a small and low cost gps tracker that cuts the fuel pump of the machine in case of entering a protected area.

It is the first global cybershield for our forests and it's a viable, low cost solution for deforestation.

Describe the data driven strategy

The Code of Conscience combines geolocation data from all the natural reserves in the world with the geolocation of heavy vehicles.

The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is the largest assembly of data on the world's terrestrial and marine protected areas, containing more than 260,000 protected areas, with records covering 245 countries and territories throughout the world. The WDPA is a joint venture between the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA).

Data for the WDPA is collected from international convention secretariats, governments and collaborating NGOs, but the role of custodian is allocated to the Protected Areas Programme of UNEP-WCMC. The WDPA delivers invaluable information to decision-makers around the world, particularly in terms of measuring the extent and effectiveness of protected areas as an indicator for meeting global biodiversity targets.

Describe the creative use of data, or how the data enhanced the creative output

This Data driven tool can have a positive impact in the world and businesses.

Heavy duty Machines companies can implement the code into their new machines, guaranteeing that their future machines won't harm a protected area.

Companies can oblige all of its supply chain machines to have it installed.

Banking Institutions can give credit only to companies that have installed the CoC into their heavy machines.

List the data driven results

We started implementing the Code in heavy machines from 3Tentos, one of the biggest Brazilian Agricultural companies.

A Latin America government just signed the implementation of the Code of Conscience on heavy machines, trucks and boats operating near the Amazon.

Two global manufacturers are discussing the implementation of the code on future machinery and a government in Europe is interested in turning the Code into a law.
