Execution

Visitors to First to Greatness may either browse all 64 historic firsts, or participate in a challenge by signing in and uploading their footage. Upon entering the browsing section, a video shows random highlights from all the currently completed challenges. Visitors may also filter all the challenges by game, or click on a gamer’s tag to view their Greatness Gallery with all of that gamer’s completed challenges.

Outcome

After launch, gamers quickly surged towards their PS4s. Over 700 videos were submitted in the first week alone. After two weeks, all but six of the most difficult challenges had been completed and the site had received almost 200,000 visitors. First to Greatness messaging achieved over 5 million social impressions and the First to Greatness trailer gained over 250,000 views with 78% completion rate. Ultimately, First to Greatness contributed to the most successful console launch in PlayStation’s history.

Strategy

With the imminent launch of the PS4, we needed to further expand the “Greatness Awaits” platform while giving gamers more of what they want. The PS4 included brand new features never-before experienced on any gaming console. “First to Greatness” would need to build off of the “Greatness Awaits” brand idea and encourage PS4 early-adopters to adopt these new features into their current gaming behavior.

Our core audience craves overcoming gaming challenges and being recognized by the wider gaming community. Launching a week after the PS4, our “First to Greatness” site contained 64 in-game challenges across 11 launch titles. Gamers could earn their place in PlayStation history by being the first to complete a challenge and upload that game footage to our site using PS4’s new share button.
